Samuel J Herman sculptor, painter and glass artist (1936 - 2020)
He was at the very centre of the development of the studio glass movement in Britain and the rest of Europe as well as Australia. His influence is seminal - he not only facilitated and developed the revolutionary techniques pioneered by Littleton and Labino but also brought about a new aesthetic approach. Following his lead, colours in blown glass work became more textured and increasingly fluid.
In 1971 The Victoria and Albert Museum held a major and highly acclaimed exhibition of his work. He since exhibited extensively throughout the world and his work is in public and private collections from the Victoria & Albert Museum in London to the Metropolitan Museum in New York and The National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne.
From 1990 he divided his time between his studios in the UK and Spain developing a wider oeuvre that includes painting, collage, using stained glass with welded steel to create sculptural and lighting pieces and more recently he also returned to using bronze in his sculpture.
