"Samuel J Herman is without doubt one of the most important and influential studio glass artists working today." - extract from article by Mark Hill and Dr. Graham Cooley
Sam Herman's glass work can be divided into five distinct periods:
The early work made when he was first working in the UK in the late 1960's and early 1970's.
The body of work he made at the Belgian glass factory at Val St. Lambert in the early and late 1970's.
His Australian work while he was living in Australia from 1974 to 1979.
The work made at his London Studio at Lots Road from 1979 to 1984.
The work made after a 23 year absence from blowing glass from 2007 to the present time
"Glass is the only medium which has a motion of its own. Consequently it is just as important to know when to arrest that motion as to initiate it. It is literally a dance between the material and the artist. It is a dance of instantaneous decisions - miniscule miscalculations make the difference between a mediocre piece of work and and a good piece." Samuel J Herman
